What are flat feet?

While most people’s feet have a moderate raised arch, creating that drawn-in ‘waist’ in our footprints, some feet are completely flat to the floor. This occurs when the tendons in your feet aren’t working together to create the tension required for supporting that arch. Flat feet, also known as fallen arches, can have numerous causes such as an abnormality that’s present from birth, damaged or torn tendons, health conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or even nerve damage. Many people live painlessly with flat feet, but the condition can cause multiple complications.

The most common symptom of flat foot is a pain in the foot. This can occur as a result of strained muscles and connecting ligaments. Abnormal stresses on the knee and hip may result in pain in these joints. These stresses are likely if the ankles turn inward.

Most people have no symptoms associated with flat foot. But some people with flat foot experience foot pain, particularly in the heel or arch area.
For painful flat feet, treatments include arch supports for the shoes, stretching or a structurally supportive shoe.

Individuals with flat foot or low arches often need a lower arch on their orthotics to provide the best support for their feet, where normal insoles or arch supports may not do the trick. Low arch insoles and arch supports are designed for use with flat feet and low arch types so that the arch support is lower than the average arch to provide the right amount of support.
